how to choose your funeral flowers

Chosing a funeral flower design is a tangible reminder of the beauty and fragility of life and of course provides comfort to the grieving family and friends.

The inspiration behind this blog came about when I recently assisted a gentlemen looking for flowers for his wife who had passed .. there was much indecision what he and the other family members wanted .. so I hope at this difficut time this helps someone out there struggling with indecision on what to choose.

When selecting flowers for a funeral, have a think about their personality and interests. Or,  you may want to select flowers that reflect their favourite colour/s or flower varieties.  For my own grandmother Iris I chose a open flower ring of irises which were fortunately in season!  White is the traditional colour for funeral flowers but other colours can have a symbolic meaning.

It is important to consider the meaning behind the flowers you choose. Each type of flower symbolises different emotions and can convey a specific message. For example, lilies symbolize the restored innocence of the soul of the deceased, while roses can represent love and purity.

One popular option for could be an arrangement placed on the top of a casket, usually purchased by close family, such as a sibling, or partner of the deceased.  These arrangements are typically the largest – and can be anything from 2.5ft to 6ft long – these funeral designs often feature large focal flowers such as lilies, roses, gerberas (as opposed to germinis – the smaller variety) hydrangeas and orchids.

Funeral letters and bespoke tributes are usually purchased by the relevant family member and can spell out their name or family nickname, for example ‘Mum’ ‘Dad’ or ‘Nan’.  These letters are often arranged and mounted onto a frame to make them easier to lift and display at the correct position or angle.

Tribute angel wings are a lovely funeral tribute – sometimes edged with feathers and then based in white chrysanthemums - with a central spray in a favourite colour.  Another lovely choice is the Gates of Heaven design, it relates to the iconic gates of heaven.  Usually based in white.

Smaller designs, such as funeral hearts are a popular choice for funeral tributes and can be a personal way to show love and compassion for the deceased.  Double funeral hearts are a popular shoice that depicts two hearts joined, an open heart tribute is also a very popular choice.

Tribute pillows, cushions or posies are often given by younger family members or more distant family, friends or neighbours.

In recent years, eco friendly funeral designs have become more popular, one of which is the mossed fully compostable base - the plants are embedded into the moss and soil, creating a wonderful and long lasting eco tribute, different plants can be chosen from season to season - visit our funeral flowers gallery for more ideas
